Christ Before Jericho

Joshua chapter 5
Sermon by Dr Nick Needham

Here in Joshua chapter 5 a new era begins, Moses is dead, Joshua now leads the people, there is no more wandering in the wilderness, no manna. Israel is on the edge of the Promised Land but that land is full of enemies who worship false gods in the most evil manner. Fierce and terrible warfare lies ahead and it begins immediately for in front of them lies the city of Jericho. Joshua is out on his own perhaps looking at the city before them. What is going through his mind? Ahead of him he sees a man holding a drawn sword who when asked tells Joshua that he is "The Captain of the Lord's". Who is this man? Why does Joshua fall down and worship him? Why must he take off his sandal? What lessons are there for us to learn here, what encouragements and warnings do we learn from this meeting?
